“From the experience of the world toward the knowledge of God” was the conference of Archbishop Gerard Müller, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, delivered on Saturday, November 10th, the final day of the Fifth World Congress of Metaphysics 2012, organized by the Idente Foundation for Study and Research.
The Congress, inaugurated on Thursday, November 8th, by Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, was the scene of intense intellectual exchange among specialists from 29 nations, representing as well a wide array of disciplines, from which they addressed the field of Metaphysics.
On November 9th, Friday evening, the metaphysical reflection found a privileged aesthetic expression in artistic representation entitled “Legends of Love.” Paolo Baiocco, Italian director presented in honor of Fernando Riel a unique harmony of the poet’s words and the most beautiful arias of international lyrical repertory, interpreted by the soprano María Papaioannou and pianist Elina Savvidou. The Embassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Italy, Leonidas S. Markides, was present among the honored guests.
The final day of the Congress consisted of the round-table discussion on “Metaphysics and Theology” presided by Msgr. Gerard Müller, with participants Angel Galindo Garcia, Rector of the Pontifical University of Salamanca, Jose Maria Lopez, Idente Foundation for Study and Research, Hunter Brown, Professor of King’s University College, Nicholas Capaldi, Professor of Loyola University of New Orleans, and Manuel del Campo, Professor of Theology in the University of San Damaso of Madrid.
In his conference, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, underscored the metaphysical foundations of the Christian vision of world and of the human being. He explained how the human being, beginning with the experience of the real world, aspires and can attain knowledge of God as origin and destiny of all finite being. Only in light of this “transcendental orientation,” archbishop Müller affirmed, do human beings recognize themselves as persons. He said that the metaphysical and real character of knowledge is possible only because human beings, “constituted in their own intentionality by the unworldly absolute of God,” “are not able to renounce the sense mediation with its material and sociological context, that sustains the material conditions of their existence.” He emphasized that the condition for making possible a true dialogue between natural theology and human reason, is a metaphysics of the real, in light of the supernatural revelation of God in Christ.
The Congress ended in the afternoon with the conference given by Professor Ricardo Piñero, Dean of Philosophy at the Pontifical University of Salamanca, with the theme “Philosophical Aesthetics and Genetic Metaphysics: The Beauty of Truth, the Challenge of Love.” Finally, Fr. Jesús Fernández Hernández, President of the World Congress of Metaphysics and President of the Idente Foundation for Study and Research, thanked all those present for contributing with the fruit of their intellectual labors, inviting all to continue their efforts insistently searching for the ultimate grounding of all science.
The participants – among whom were Msgr. Melchor Sanchez, Subsecretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Winfred Rohr, of the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Juana Sánchez Gey-Venegas, of the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid, Dominic Balestra, of Fordham University – expressed their happiness for having been able to form part of the fifth edition of the international forum of dialogue. It has been a space of mutual enrichment, on the human level as well as the spiritual level, in the search for the ultimate foundation of all the sciences.
